International Mr. Leather

By: Kinky Brothers

More than 50 contestants from across the U.S. and around the world will compete at the 31st annual International Mr. Leather, May 21-25, 2009 (Memorial Day Weekend) in Chicago. All events will be held at the host hotel, The Chicago Hilton on Michigan Avenue. Most of the contestants come from the USA, Canada, Europe and Australia to compete at IML. The Los Angeles area will be represented by Ken Hearst, Mr. Los Angeles Leather 2009, and Mathew McLean, Mr. Long Beach Leather 2008. Mr. Mike of the San Diego Eagle, and John Kunz, Mr. Palm Springs Leather 2009 will also be competing. All will fly into Chicago to compete for the coveted leather title of International Mr. Leather 2009. Gary Iriza, International Mr. Leather 2008, and a panel of eight other distinguished judges will select Gary’s successor.

If you have never been to a Mr. Leather contest in the LA area, you don’t know what you are missing. The best way to describe a Mr. Leather contest is to simply imagine the Miss America pageant, but with hot masculine male contestants. The formal gown and question segment is our formal leather and speech segment. The swimsuit competition is our hunky men strutting across the stage in a leather jock strap, showing a lot of skin. The contestants go through a private interview where a panel of judges ask the contestants a variety of questions for about 15 minutes to determine who can be the best representative of the leather title. Most leather titleholders can be identified by a leather vest on their back and/or a medallion they are proudly wearing around their neck. Maybe you have seen some of these leather titleholders around town.

IML is also an annual gathering for many people with similar leather/kink/fetish interests. People come from around the world that may have met on-line via some website chat. For many, this is the one time of the year they will get to see each other. It’s like the family getting together for Thanksgiving weekend, but with a lot of sex. A very distinctive sexual energy is created in the hotel lobby by the weekend attendees. Here is where most of the socializing happens everyday and night. The view from the lobby’s higher level is a sea of hot men in leather gear drinking, cruising, flirting, kissing, manhandling, and chatting just to get things started. There’s no need to go to any other bar because it’s all happening in the hotel.

Many people attend IML because of the huge on site vendor market. It is probably the largest leather oriented vendor market in North America. One can find anything from a bondage table to a dildo the size of a Travelocity gnome and have it shipped home. It is the best cruising place as one walks through the many aisles of booths selling leatherwear, toys, boots, fetish gear, and more. Many major porn companies have their star performers at the booths signing autographs and posing for photos. Steamworks bath house has porn models hanging around in just white towels for one to enjoy. This takes shopping to a whole other level.

Friday and Saturday nights are packed with many parties in the hotel ballrooms which are open to everyone. Canada usually hosts a party in honor of their Canadian contestants. If you have a uniform fetish, check out the uniform party. The men of Onyx put on a jammin’ dance party with DJ’s that rock the dance floor. Folsom Street Events is hosting a party with TitanMen and Mr. S Leather. Of course there are plenty of smaller private parties in hotel rooms, which you’ll have to earn your invitation to or cruise the hall ways. The IML victory dance party is at the House of Blues and the Monday night closing party is at Excalibur, where everyone lets down their hair.

IML is such a high energy leather party weekend that you will need a relaxing vacation after you get back home. Whether you are a leather/kink/fetish novice or a seasoned leatherman, IML weekend is for you. Check out the details at www.IMrL.com. Good luck to Ken Hearst and all the IML contestants.
